CHALLENGE – Wanting to keep their staff, contractors and tenants safe at all times, Housing New Zealand decided it was necessary to help their staff recognise and manage the many hazards that they may face when working in or around a Housing New Zealand property. Port were asked to develop a booklet that would educate their staff about basic workplace health and safety and, most importantly, about situational awareness.
IDEA – Through several workshops with key stakeholders (maintenance contractors/HNZ staff) we decided to break the booklet up into sections for the different areas of safety that needed addressing – PPE, securing a site, slips, trips and falls, etc. Using a simple, ‘spot-the-difference’, illustrative style, we created a series of pictorial themes of situations in which staff could potentially encounter risks. Dog attacks, exposure to hazardous substances and the potential for assaults are just some of the hazards that were highlighted in the booklet. The simplicity of the illustration made it easy for the reader to really focus in on recognising hazards and identify situations that could potentially cause harm. Clear and uncomplicated text provided information on how staff could successfully manage any hazards they identified.
RESULT – A team effort to provide healthy safer homes for people, and a safe and healthy environment for HNZ staff and maintenance contractors to work in.
